" You just may start a chain reaction." -Rachel Joy Scott
Who was Rachel Scott?
Rachel Joy Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School tragedy on April 20, 1999. Immediately after the tragedy, her father Darrell began to speak and used writings and drawings from Rachel’s diaries to illustrate the need for a kinder, more compassionate nation. Today, Darrell and over thirty presenters honor Rachel’s life by reaching the nation with Rachel’s simple but profound message. What is the mission of Friends of Rachel? We exist to inspire, equip and empower every person to create a permanent positive culture change in their school and community by starting a chain reaction of kindness and compassion. What type of activities do Friends of Rachel members participate in? Last year our school held two food drives, one in the fall and one in the spring and combined collected over 1000 food items to benefit the Northern RI Food Pantry. We encouraged acts of kindness and wrote our acts on paper to create a 'chain reaction' inspired by Rachel. We sold 'April Friends Day/National Stop Bullying Day' bracelets to remind us that every day should be April Friends Day, not just April 1st. Our group also initiated 'Mix It Up' lunches, which encouraged students to sit with students they may not know and introduce themselves. We hope to have some fun events and initiatives this year as well. |
